John Muir – A Local Man

John Muir was a famous local man
Who came from sunny Dunbar
Born in 1838
He travelled near and far
 
Brought up in a strict religious home
His bible he did read
Taught by his father to follow God
And then he would succeed
 
John had a very big family
Siblings 8 in all
They loved to laugh and play fun games
But then he heard his call.
 
In early years he did find
That nature was his thing
He spent his life involved in such
And pleasures he did bring
 
From Scotland he travelled to the USA
On the President he made his mark
And persuaded him to set aside some land
And founded a national park
 
Yosemite was its name
148 million acres in size
He created it for the world to enjoy
America’s star prize
 
1914 was a very sad year
At 76 John Muir passed away
He left a legacy for life
One that would always stay
 
Nature is our future
Nature is our past
And if we all work together
Nature will always last.
 

Friends of John Muir Country Park

The next work day will be on Saturday 21^st January 2012

The job for the day will be to remove the old fencing from the plantation near the Tyne Estuary

We will meet at Linkfield car park at 10am and will finish around 2pm

Please bring warm clothing, study shoes, waterproofs and lunch

There will be tea, coffee and biscuits provided!

Friends Social Event with Photo Sharing

Wednesday 8th February, 7.30pm at John Muir’s Birthplace

Following on from similar very successful events in the past, we plan to do the same again!  Members are encouraged to show and talk about three of their favourite images.  5 minutes per person!  Refreshments will also be served!  If you wish to be involved, please e-mail your images to duncan dot smeed at gmail dot com and these will put into a presentation for ease of showing. Meet at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start at JMB.

This exhibition in John Muir’s Birthplace was inspired by John Muir’s life and writing and has drawn together 28 established and emerging contemporary artists and poets from across Scotland and beyond. The annual Friends sand sculpture competition is on Saturday 6th August, to be precise, from 11am to 3pm, at the East Beach in Dunbar. It is at the east end of that beach, accessed from the bottom of the Golf House Road. There are prizes for the best John
Muir-themed sculpture (some years have seen castles, mermaids and sea creatures,
some found in the seas around Dunbar, some not) for just £2 for an adult, £1 for
a child and £5 for a family. Bring your imagination with your bucket and spade!
